Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. Classrooms Reopen!
Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. classrooms have reopened! Teachers, teacher aides, classroom aides, bus drivers, other classroom staff and CHILDREN have waited a long time to hear those words!!
Classrooms are not the same as they were last year. There are many new protocols and some activities have changed or been removed from the curriculum. But everyone is working towards giving the children as normal of an experience as possible!
In the Canton 2 classroom, children are learning their new classmates’ names while practicing classroom rules of Be Safe, Be Kind and Be Responsible. The class read the book Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. This story talks about coming to school for the first time and learning new names of classmates. The main character in the book, Chrysanthemum struggles with children making fun of her name. The Head Start class made their own names on a heart and each time Chrysanthemum's feelings were hurt, the children crumpled their heart. When someone would do something to make her feel better, the children tried to fix their heart, and after the story, the children made a classroom heart and attached each child's heart to it with the lesson of “before you speak, think and be smart. It's hard to heal a wrinkled heart.” The lesson ended with telling ways the children could be kind in school.
